Spring is here - and although we had a snow storm this weekend here in western Canada, the sun is shining today - and I swear things are starting to look less brown outside! I started my spring prep with some fun spring makeup purchases, and now, I'm ready to put away the dark winter polishes and start wearing some fun colors!

The Brands:

Using beauty products with less harmful chemicals is important to me - and nail polishes are no exceptions. The EU has implemented a great campaign on chemical ingredients - which is a great step in protecting consumers. Canada has some improvement to do, read this interesting article by Dr. Suzuki. I have tried water based nailpolish, but underwhelmed with the results I have decided to use 5-free conventional nailpolish. Although these polishes are not all natural, I believe they are a step in the right direction. 5-free nail polishes do not contain Dibutyl Phthalate, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, and Camphor. Check out the details of why these ingredients are harmful here.

For my spring colors, I have decided to use Zoya and LVX (you would have seen a sneak peak on my instagram). Zoya is relatively easy to find around town (I ordered mine from nailpolishcanada), LVX I found luckily at my local Winners. But of course, thanks to amazon, you can also find them online.

Now let's get to the good stuff, the colors!

Zoya & LVX in Action

So, here's what they look like in action. I have started from the top with one coat, two coats, and two coats topped with a third coat of Monet. I cannot even describe how much I love Monet. I didn't read great reviews about the application online, but I was willing to take the risk because it's a great mix with so many different colors. Sure it's a bit of a jelly formula that takes some learning to apply, here are a few tips on applying Monet:

- shake up the bottle before you begin
- give the brush a few good swirls before applying to ensure you get enough of the beautiful flakes
- apply the polish in even strokes, don't play around with it if it's uneven, just give it some time to dry and re-apply a new layer using the same steps.
