Nestled in a bungalow on 17th Avenue SW in Calgary, you’ll find Esme. What attracted me to this beauty bar was their Instagram - they always have fun pots and advertise sales!

For my first visit I went for a well deserved and desperately needed pedicure. My toes looked much like these.

Upon arrival I was offered something to drink, and then whisked away to my seat and had a glass of water had to me.

What also brought me to Esme is the fact they use buckets for their pedicures, not those “sinks” that get cleaned after each use. The sinks terrify me, I can only imagine what is lingering in the water pumps of those contraptions. Don’t believe me? Google it!

My pedicure began as usual with the lovely soak file down those darn calluses and nail shaping. Sanding my hooves down wasn’t an easy feat, but my technician did a great job.

What I was looking forward to the most was a foot massage for my oh-so-tired feet as part of this I was able to choose the essential oil for my massage I decided to go for something calm and soothing for my tired muscles. The massage was good, but I personally nejoy more pressure applied during feet massages.

Afterwards I was able to choose the color I wanted for my toes - of which they had well over but looks like a hundreds of options. I chose gel polish because I didn’t have flip flops with me, and God knows regular polish wouldn’t have made it home with socks on! Polish application was good, but I did notice some polish spots (tiny ones) on my skin that weren’t cleaned up.

Overall, I would recommend Esme. If you have time for a weekday pamper they have great promotions. The customer service was great, friendly and welcoming.

7 day wear nail polish, that doesn't need a lamp or other special tools to set? Yes please! I don't know what it is, but I LOVE NAIL POLISH! It's one of those things that just having my nails done makes me feel like a superstar. I love shellac polish (when I can treat myself), and although I have a gel nail polish set with an LED light, I can't always commit to a whole hour process of getting my nails done, which is why this product is so revolutionary. Before we begin, my nail needs:

Nail shape: Oval
Nail strength: average strength
Wear/tare: I'm a mama, I must wash my hands 1 million times a day and of course doing tons of dishes on top of that every day

This nail polish claims to last 1 week - chip free with two easy steps. It claims to do this with exposure to natural light, that activates the patent-pending ProLight Technology to set the polish. All you need to do is apply the color, and then apply the top coat. As with all long-wear polish it's recommended you cap the tips of your nails with both the color and the top coat. 

I really put this polish (color: Rose Brocade #173) to the test. I am constantly washing my hands all day long and of course doing dishes. I typically wear gloves washing dishes but while trying this polish combo I decided to forgo using gloves to see how the polish would last. 

I have to say the polish applied great - all you need is two coats and a top coat. I found that it dried and set quickly. Below are the results of how the polish wore for the full 7 days. I was impressed that after 7 days the polish did still look very shiny, but as you can see, by day 7, only my pinky finger was chip free. I have to admit we did have quite a few cloudy days over the past week, and rain so I wasn't able to spend too much time in the sun. That may have impacted how the polish wore since you need natural light  to "cure" it.

​Even though I had a major chip by day 5, I still found this polish wore better than regular nail polish. After 5 days after the abuse my poor hands take I'm impressed at how it looked in the end. Overall, I would repurchase this product.

Much of the skincare we use on a daily basis contains many ingredients - most of which I can't pronounce and couldn't tell you what they really are. Les Soins de Jacynthe skincare is a Canadian skincare company founded by ​Jacynthe René, a Canadian actress and producer, and publisher. Le Soins de Jacythe skincare line is made free of chemicals, petroleum by-products, preservatives and synthetic fragrance. The line uses use active ingredients and fragrances are made with plants and flowers. The skincare line is also cruelty free. 

I put to the test Jacynthe's Trio ($130 CDN)  consisting of:

Floral Water ($21 CDN): a rose water spray to be used after cleansing to the absorption of the serum

Jacynthe's Serum ($49 CND 0.5oz): a oil based skin serum, containing rose-hip oil and vitamin E

I was thoroughly impressed with this skincare line. The ingredients - truly natural ingredients that you can actually pronounce, and they do smell like essential oils - not anything overwhelming. And best of all Canadian made - it's great to support local products. The glass packaging is great - a recyclable package and the dark color glass protects the ingredients from UV rays. Keep in mind though that anything with oils are best stored in dark cool places. 

For my combination skin, here are the results:

-Oil cleanser was great at removing makeup I did find I had to go in with a regular cleanser to cleanse my oily skin.

- Floral Water: Was my favorite from the line. The smell of the roses was lovely, and really refreshing especially in the mornings.

- Serum: it made my face angry - and caused it to break out. I immediately saw an improvement on my skin as soon as I stopped using the serum.

Overall, if you're looking at supporting local Canadian made products and using natural ingredients look into Les Soins de Jacynthe skincare.

The main ingredient found in the line is southernwood - a plant with antioxidant properties that claims to restore the skin’s moisture barrier for fresher and healthier-looking skin. This skincare line is meant to combat environmental factors that can cause stress to the skin. It claims to replenish and retain moisture to tired skin; leaving your skin refreshed, rejuvenated and radiant. It also helps to protect the skin from drying out. What I liked more about this new Aveeno skincare line is that it's focusing on protecting and hydrating your skin from all environmental stress it goes through on a daily basis. I often wonder how just car pollution affects our skin. My favorite from the skincare line was the scrub. I prefer to use it few times a week instead of daily as my skin is sensitive to daily exfoliation. The moisturizers are best suited for dryer skin; not acne or oily skin in my opinion. If you're looking for a new skincare line for dry skin, this is definitely one to check out.

Flawless skin - isn't that what we all want when we apply foundation? Smashbox created a BB Water product that is a very liquid foundation - their Camera Ready BB Water Broad Spectrum SPF 30. You may remember I tried their BB Cream for Eyes a few year ago (see that review here). Before we begin, first about my foundation needs:

The basis of this BB Water is that it is a hydrating and oil-free formula that creates a sheer, radiant finish that lasts. It claims to delivers a demi-matte finish that will minimizes the look of fine lines, pores, and blemishes. Because of the formula, it claims it allows you to build coverage one drop at a time, and will not dry, or cake. Here is some more information directly from Smashbox:

I think what interested me most about this is how light the formula was, and I was really intrigued by the dropper as that really helps to control how much you use, and build up coverage slowly. 

In this case, I think pictures speak louder than any words I can type here! I'm so impressed with this BB Water. It literally feels like NOTHING on the skin, and covers so naturally, and last well all day. I personally wear it with the Rimmel Primer as my skin is quite oily.

Yes, yes more skincare this week! You'll remember that I tried the Malin + Goetz Cleanser on my previous post - I also tried their resurfacing glycolic pads. Apart from a good cleanser, I believe that a good exfoliant is a must have for my skin. And I love my acid peels! First a quick recap on my skin.

These resurfacing pads are pretty simple - they contain 10% physician grade glycolic acid. This product claims to (see more info here):

• removing dead skin cells from your skin
• encourage cell turnover and collagen production 
• smooth wrinkles, clear pores, and improve texture of the skin

To use the pads, all you do is smooth them over clean skin and leave it on for 20 minutes. You can complete this treatment 1-3 times per week. Since my skin is not particularly sensitive, I like to apply it as an overnight treatment and rinse it off in the morning. 

If you're looking to try a glycolic peel as a treatment for your skin I recommend these resufacing pads. With 50 pads of physicial grade glycolic acid I believe it's an affordable treatment to use a few times a week. I have tried professional peels before, and although this does not replace those treatments - they are great to keep you skin in tip top shape. My skin felt smoother, clear and radiant after using these over a few weeks. I also liked that they were portable, and great for travel.

If you've never tried any sort of peel before or you are scared that you will look like Samantha from Sex and the City I would recommend you start off with any treatment once a week at home, and then slowly increase it to 2-3 times a week.

I'm a skincare junkie, I've said it. I love trying new skincare to see what's out there and always on the hunt for anything that will improve my skin. Out of my entire skincare regimen, I believe cleansers are the most important product. If you don't have clean canvas to begin with, what's the point? So let's begin! First, what am I dealing with?

Malin and Goetz skincare is a family owned and operated apothecary from New York, started in 2004 focusing on sensitive skin. Learn more about the history of the line here.

This skincare line is all about the pH balance of the skin, and keeping the skin hydrated. This particular cleanser contains grapefruit extract, which is both an astringent and naturally antibacterial. This gel cleanser is also advertised as a makeup remover, and claims can eliminate the use of a toner. I'm all about the "all-in-one" products. One less step to worry about is a great thing!

I was really impressed by this cleanser. How can I tell? I've almost used this bottle to the last drop.! I have been using this cleanser exclusively over the past few months and it has kept breakouts at bay for me, and keeps my skin clear. The 8oz bottle is a generous size that has lasted me well over 3 months. Although I have seem minimal new breakouts, I like how my pores look, but I have not seen a drastic improvement on my skin texture overall.

Now as a makeup remover, it did a great job on every day makeup. But for those extra special occasions I did have to do a double wash to get my face clean. Now for the elimination of a toner - I'm not going to lie, I'm not sure I'm a huge toner believer. I was fine thought a toner with this face wash but I can't say I would know what I'm missing.

Overall, this cleanser is comparable to medical grade cleansers I have tried in the past. If you are on the hunt for a new cleanser, this is one to try. I'm drying to a crisp here in Calgary, Canada. Yes, it's summer here, but we don't have any sort of humid summers, we have hot (this year seems hotter than usual!) dry summers. So although I think my poor dry skin will get a break from the harsh winters - not the case here! So what's a girl to do? Welcome Jealous Grapeseed + Macadamia Coffee Scrub.

This product review may seem a little familiar, and that's because this is the second scrub I've tried from the Jealous line. I first tried the Coconut + Coffee Scrub (see my review here). This scrub has grapeseed and macadamia nut oil. What are these oils good for you ask?

This particular scrub is formulated for oily skin; claiming to to balance oil production and tighten skin. And the rest of the ingredients, is stuff you can actually pronounce~ coffee rounds, raw brown sugar, sea salt, vitamin, and minerals. Check out their expanded line of scrubs below.

Like other Jealous Scrubs, this one is a little messy to apply, but totally worth it! The smell of coffee will definitely wake you up, and the coffee grounds are great at gently exfoliating the skin. The packaging may seen a little unconventional, but it has a "zipper close" and the bag is waterproof, and I haven't had any issues with storing it.

Like the other Jealous Body scrub I've tried, this did not disappoint. I first used it just as a hand scrub before a manicure and my hands felt like butter afterwards. They were very soft, and moisturized, but did not feel greasy. I have also tried this as a full body scrub a few times, and had same results. It left my body soft and smooth. I particularly enjoyed the results on my feet - which can take a beating over the summer.

If you haven't tried Jealous Body Scrubs before - I would recommend them.  First of all, it's a local Canadian company, and their scrubs are all natural. With a mini-me on the way in a few months, I've been more conscious of what I've been using on my skin - this stuff is not only great but has great ingredients!

Mascara is one of those makeup products that can either make or break a look. In my latest mascara adventures I decided to try the new Rimmel Wonder'lash Mascara. Before we get started, a bit about my mascara needs:

Facts about my eyes:
Size: Medium
Shape: Almond

Type: Hooded (and I mean hooooded)
Lashes: Medium length, straight

I don't often purchase drugstore mascaras. Because of my hooded eyes i often end up with racoon eyes at the end of the day. And although I don't mind the thickness of my lashes, they are as straight as can be, and I need something that will hold them up all day long.

This mascara claims to:
-        Nourish lashes with  Argan Oil.
-        Provide full, perfectly smooth, clump-free lashes for maximum volume.
-        Provide an ultra-Flex brush hugs lashes defining them from root to tip.

I had high hopes for this mascara - with the argan oi; and claims of "maximum volume". I however, was very underwhelmed with this mascara. It did provide some volume, but the volume did not hold throughout the day with my straight lashes. And the volume itself, was only mediocre at best; I've tried much better options before. If you have similar mascara needs, I say skip this mascara.

A good body scrub can make all the difference between rough skin and baby smooth skin. With another harsh dry winter in Canada my skin is in dire need of exfoliation and hydration. - and with Jealous being a Canadian company - they know how bad our winters can be! I was fortunate enough to be able to try the Jealous Body Scrub. The scrub is available online - and they ship to Canada and US for free! First a little bit about my skin:

This body scrub has an impressive ingredient list. First ingredient is of course coffee, but also contains naturally exfoliating and hydrating oils and vitamins. Here is the full list - all things I can actually pronounce! (see source here):

• coffee grounds stimulate blood flow which help reduce the appearance of cellulite, eczema, stretch marks, age spots, varicose veins, psoriasis & acne
• brown sugar & sea salt exfoliate and rejuvenate your skin
• cold pressed organic coconut oil hydrates & moisturizes your skin
• vitamin E & minerals protect and repair your skin

The scrub itself comes in a paper water proof resealable bag - similar to how you would find some coffee beans. I was a little worried taking the bag in the shower, but i've gotten it wet and I've had no issues - just make sure that you seal it when not in use. The package contains 200g of product.

I can describe my skin in four words words after using this scrub: Baby soft moisturized skin. Did it live up to the claim of "help reduce the appearance of cellulite, eczema, stretch marks, age spots, varicose veins, psoriasis & acne"? On my skin I only have cellulite which I'm not too fussy about. I think to really put this to the test it would require using the scrub at least 3 times a week (as instructed) for a few weeks or months to see the full results. 

Using the scrub? Yes it's messy. You'll get scrub all over your bathtub, but it just rinses away. But who doesn't love waking up to a fresh pot of coffee being brewed? I personally love the smell - it really wakes you up! 

The scrub itself is exactly what you imagine it to be - coffee grinds. I used about 2-3 handfuls for each use. In total, you can get about 5-10 uses from the package. I was very impressed with ingredient list - both because they are truly natural ingredients and they are great for the skin. The moisturizing ingredients in this scrub really do double duty:

1. Gently exfoliates the skin - I sometimes find the sugar scrubs can be a little harsh on the skin, but this coffee scrub got the job done without being overly rough on the skin

2. Naturally Moisturizes the skin - I think the coconut oil is the real winner here. My skin did not feel oily or sticky afterwards - just naturally moisturized. I didn't have to apply any moisturizer after showering!
