Marc Jacobs (or Marc, as I like to call him, you know like we're buddies) now has his own makeup line. Seems like many designers over the past few years have come out with their own make-up lines. I have some reservations of designers 'jumping ship' into the cosmetic industry - but I thought I would give this foundation a try as it was recommended as a great option from my local Sephora.
First, about my foundation needs:
Facts about my skin:
Skin tone: Olive tone
Skin type: Oily and acne prone
Problems: Occasional breakouts on the chin and cheeks, acne scars, large pores in the t-zone, an oily t-zone, and the odd wrinkle.
The Product: Marc Jacob Genius Gel Supercharged Foundation in Golden medium ($58 CDN)
This foundation is one of few out there that does not contain SPF. Depending on the use, I think this is a good thing! I find having SPF in foundations makes my skin oilier, and I prefer to use a powder with SPF on top of foundation to avoid the possibility of looking like a ghost under flash photography. And well for night time - you can go SPF free!
Finally, on to the packaging - this foundation actually has a pump! I don't know who started the trend to not offer pumps out there. For me, this is an essential to keeping everything neat and tidy during application.
The Results
Now for the actual product - for some reason when you first apply it looks streaky and terrible but as you even it out on your skin, and it sets something MAGICAL happens! For a full coverage finish, I use about 1-2 full pumps all over my face. The formula is long-lasting, and keeps oil to a minimum. I would definetly purchase this foundation again - just for the way it sets beautifully on the skin, and for how lovely this bottle it looks in any make-up cabinet.
I've used this foundation for a few months now. Given the price, I typically like to use it for special occasions, and those days when my skin is angry and 'less than cooperative' shall we say? The one set-back for this foundation is the color range (16 in total) does not encompass all skin tones. This shade (golden medium) was the closest match to my olive skin tone - but it's still on the lighter side.
- a kabuki type brush works best for application
- work with the product before it sets when you are trying to build coverage. After it sets it doesn't blend well if you try to build more coverage
- give it a few seconds to set when you are finished yoru application before you start working with your other products like blush. This will allow the product set on your skin
- dry skin friends - stay away! as this will cling to any dry patches
